The following entries (from beginning runner to half marathon finisher) represents a continuing journey of tremendous grief and sorrow, and of transformation - largely through the therapeutic power of running. The sorrow that has broken my heart open wide has in time allowed me to experience the beauty of being in the present moment. And of course, without the support of family and friends to guide me, I would not have made it this far.

If you have lost someone in your life, I offer these words and verse (some Kristy's, some mine and others) with the hope it may touch your heart and help you heal.

SUITS ME

your room has a chair
it sits in the corner
small and light
used and battered

you found it one day
and took it home
one of your few possessions
you used it often

you gave away your things
but kept the chair
I wanted to know why
"It suits me," you said

  1. a perfect portrait of her practical acceptance of materiality balanced against her refusal to be ensnared by it.

  2. Laughed and cried at the same time at this one. So Kristy. Going through my closets today and thought about how minimalist she was, and how I admired that... her "refusal to be ensnared" by materialism, as anonymous said. Perfect.
